Responsible Gambling
Zorquorianroyalcourt is committed to providing a casino environment that is safe, transparent and enjoyable for every guest. We recognise that gambling is a leisure activity and that, for a small number of people, it can become a source of harm. This page explains the safeguards, tools and sources of support that are available to you at our Whangārei property and sets out our obligations under New Zealand law.
1. Adult-Only Access
Entry to all gaming areas at Zorquorianroyalcourt is restricted to persons who are aged 18 years or older. This requirement applies at all times, without exception, regardless of whether a guest intends to gamble.
Our staff are trained to challenge any person who appears to be under the age of 18 and to request acceptable photographic proof of age before permitting access to the casino floor. Acceptable documents include a current New Zealand driver licence, a current New Zealand passport, or another government-issued photographic identity document. Any person who is unable to provide satisfactory proof of age will be respectfully refused entry.
We ask all guests to assist us by not bringing minors into or through gaming areas and by alerting a member of staff if they become aware of a person they believe to be underage on the casino floor.
2. Gambling as an Optional Leisure Activity
Participation in any form of gambling at Zorquorianroyalcourt is entirely optional. Our guests visit us to enjoy a wide range of experiences, and no guest is under any obligation to gamble. We do not extend unsolicited invitations to gamble to any person, and our staff will never pressure a guest to play.
We encourage all guests who choose to gamble to approach it as they would any other leisure pursuit — with a predetermined budget, a clear time limit and a relaxed, recreational mindset. Gambling should not be viewed as a means of generating income, recovering financial losses or resolving personal difficulties.
The following principles underpin responsible play:
- Decide in advance the maximum amount you are prepared to spend and treat it as the cost of entertainment.
- Decide in advance how long you will play and keep to that time.
- Only gamble with funds that you can genuinely afford to lose without affecting your essential living expenses.
- Do not borrow money for the purpose of gambling.
- Accept that losses are a normal and expected part of gambling — do not chase them.
- Take regular breaks away from the gaming floor.
3. Time and Spending Limits
Managing the time and money you spend on gambling is one of the most effective ways to keep play enjoyable. Zorquorianroyalcourt supports this through the following practical measures.
3.1 Personal Budgeting
Before visiting our casino we recommend that you set a firm spending limit for your session. Carry only that amount — in cash or on a payment card — and leave any additional funds secured elsewhere. Once your limit is reached, end your session.
3.2 Session Time Awareness
It is easy to lose track of time in a casino environment. We recommend setting an alarm on your personal device before you begin play as a simple, effective reminder to review how long you have been gambling. Clocks are displayed throughout the property to assist you.
3.3 Property-Level Limit Arrangements
Guests who would like assistance in formalising time or spending limits at Zorquorianroyalcourt are welcome to speak confidentially with a member of our gaming staff or a duty manager at any time. Our team can explain the practical options available on the property and help you put an arrangement in place.
| Limit Type | How to Request | Takes Effect |
|---|---|---|
| Session time reminder | Speak to any gaming staff member | Immediately |
| Spend limit notation | Speak to a duty manager at the gaming desk | At the start of next session |
| Voluntary property exclusion | Written request to management — see Section 6 | As agreed with management |
4. Recognising Warning Signs
For most people gambling remains a pleasurable and controlled activity. For some, however, patterns of play can develop that begin to cause harm to themselves or to the people around them. Being aware of warning signs — in yourself or in someone you care about — is the first step towards addressing a concern.
Common warning signs that gambling may be moving beyond a comfortable limit include:
- Spending more money or time gambling than originally intended, on a regular basis.
- Continuing to gamble after the budget or time limit for a session has been reached.
- Returning to gamble in order to try to recover money lost in previous sessions.
- Feeling restless, irritable or preoccupied when not gambling.
- Gambling alone or keeping gambling habits secret from family or friends.
- Using money set aside for essential expenses — such as rent, bills or food — to gamble.
- Borrowing money, selling possessions or otherwise finding additional funds in order to gamble.
- Neglecting work, study, family or social commitments because of time spent gambling.
- Finding that gambling is no longer a source of enjoyment but feeling unable to stop.
If you recognise any of these patterns in yourself, we encourage you to take one of the practical steps described in the sections that follow.
5. Taking Breaks
Regular breaks from the gaming floor are an important part of responsible play. Stepping away — even briefly — gives you the opportunity to assess how much time and money you have spent, to reconsider whether you wish to continue, and to return to the session with a fresh perspective.
We encourage all guests to build breaks into every gambling session. During a break you might:
- Move to a non-gaming area of the property.
- Enjoy a meal or a non-gaming activity within the hotel.
- Step outside for fresh air.
- Contact a trusted friend or family member.
- Review how your session compares with the limits you set before you began.
If you feel that you are struggling to take a break or to leave the gaming floor when you decide to, please speak to a member of our staff immediately. Our team is trained to respond with respect and without judgement.
6. Property Self-Exclusion
Zorquorianroyalcourt operates a voluntary self-exclusion programme. This programme allows any person to request that they be refused entry to, or asked to leave, all gaming areas at our Whangārei property for a period they choose in advance.
6.1 How to Apply
To apply for self-exclusion, please speak in person with a duty manager at the main gaming desk or submit a written request to our management team. All requests are handled confidentially and with sensitivity. You will be asked to provide your name and a recent photograph so that staff can identify you at the entrance to gaming areas.
6.2 Duration
Self-exclusion periods available at Zorquorianroyalcourt are set out in the table below. You may choose the duration that is most appropriate for your circumstances.
| Period | Minimum | Maximum |
|---|---|---|
| Short term | 3 months | 6 months |
| Medium term | 6 months | 12 months |
| Long term | 1 year | 5 years |
| Indefinite | No end date — subject to a formal review process before reinstatement | |
6.3 Effect of Exclusion
While an exclusion is in force, Zorquorianroyalcourt will take reasonable and proportionate steps to prevent the excluded person from accessing gaming areas. If an excluded person enters or attempts to enter the gaming floor, staff will politely ask them to leave. Any winnings accrued by an excluded person during a visit that breaches their exclusion may be withheld in accordance with New Zealand law.
6.4 Reinstatement
A self-exclusion will not be lifted before the agreed period has elapsed. At the end of the period, an excluded person must make a formal written request to management and attend a brief meeting with a duty manager before access to gaming areas is restored. There is no automatic reinstatement.
6.5 Confidentiality
All information provided in connection with a self-exclusion request is held securely and used solely for the purpose of administering the exclusion. It will not be shared with third parties except where required by law. For further information about how we handle personal data, please refer to our Privacy Policy or contact privacy@zorquorianroyalcourt.com.
7. Support from Trusted Contacts
Friends and family members are often among the first to notice when someone's gambling is causing harm. Equally, a person who is concerned about their own gambling may find it easier to take the first step if a trusted contact accompanies them or supports them through the process.
Zorquorianroyalcourt welcomes approaches from trusted contacts on behalf of a guest. A family member or close friend may, with the consent of the person concerned, speak to our duty manager about the self-exclusion programme or other available support options. In appropriate circumstances, we may also accept a referral or request on behalf of a guest without prior consent, where there is a genuine and immediate concern for that person's wellbeing.
If you are concerned about another person's gambling, we recommend:
- Approaching the conversation calmly and without blame, focusing on your concern rather than the person's behaviour.
- Listening without interrupting and acknowledging their perspective.
- Encouraging them to consider one of the practical steps described on this page.
- Offering to accompany them when they speak to our team or seek external support.
- Taking care of your own wellbeing — supporting someone through a difficult time can itself be challenging.
8. Local Responsible-Gambling Resources
New Zealand has a network of community-based and government-supported services that can provide confidential assistance to anyone affected by gambling harm — whether as a person who gambles or as a family member or friend. These services are free of charge and available to all New Zealand residents.
We encourage anyone who is concerned about their gambling to reach out to the appropriate local authority or community support service in Northland or in the region closest to them. Information about available services can be obtained through New Zealand's national and local government channels, community resource centres and public health services operating in the Whangārei area.
Our own staff are also available at all times. If you would like to speak to someone at the property in confidence, please approach any member of our gaming team or ask to speak to the duty manager. All conversations of this nature are handled with complete respect for your privacy.
8.1 How External Support Can Help
Community-based responsible-gambling support typically includes:
- Confidential one-to-one conversations with a trained support person.
- Guidance for family members and trusted contacts who are affected by another person's gambling.
- Practical budgeting and financial wellbeing advice.
- Help in putting a personal action plan in place.
- Referral to wider community services where appropriate.
9. Our Staff and Their Role
Every member of the Zorquorianroyalcourt gaming team receives training in responsible gambling practices before they begin work on the casino floor and at regular intervals thereafter. Their training covers:
- Identifying behavioural indicators that may suggest a guest is experiencing difficulty.
- Approaching sensitive conversations in a respectful and non-judgemental manner.
- Explaining the property self-exclusion programme and other available options.
- Referring guests to appropriate on-property support and to external community resources.
- Enforcing the minimum age requirement consistently and fairly.
Our staff will never make a guest feel embarrassed or stigmatised for raising a concern about gambling. If a member of staff approaches you about your gambling, they are doing so because they are required by our policy to act in the interests of every guest's wellbeing.
10. Display of Responsible Gambling Information
Responsible gambling information is displayed prominently throughout the gaming areas of Zorquorianroyalcourt, including at entry points to the casino floor and in areas adjacent to gaming machines and gaming tables. This information includes guidance on keeping play within comfortable limits and a reminder that help is available on the property and in the wider community.
Brochures containing responsible gambling guidance are available free of charge from the gaming desk and from the hotel reception. Guests are welcome to take multiple copies for friends or family members.
11. Updates to This Page
Zorquorianroyalcourt Ltd reviews this Responsible Gambling page at least annually and whenever there is a material change to our practices or to applicable New Zealand law. The current version is always published at zorquorianroyalcourt.com. We recommend that guests review this page periodically.
